Judy Harwell’s professional career began in the Houston Independent School District teaching grades 1-3, where she served as a reading specialist, a computer technologist, an assistant to the Superintendent, a principal, and in the professional development department.  

 

Judy also spent two years with the Department of Defense teaching in the Philippines and in Germany.  She earned her Associated Arts Degree from Lon Morris College;  a Bachelor of Science degree from Stephen F. Austin University; a Master of Education Reading and a Master of Educational Mid-Management from Texas Southern University.  She also studied Urban Education at Harvard University.

 

Following in her father’s footsteps, she joined the Rotary Club of Bellaire Southwest Houston in 1998. She has served her Club as President two times.  She is very active in District 5890, serving on many committees and as Assistant Governor, Lt. Governor, and Sergeant-At-Arms.

 

In 2007-08, she was named “Assistant Governor of the Year”.  At present, she serves as Sergeant-At-Arms for the District and is on numerous District committees. She is a leader in the Gulf Coast Leadership Seminar. She has also traveled for Rotary to South Africa; led a GSE team to South Korea and administered polio vaccines in India.

 

Her civic activities include serving as president of the Houston Association of School Administrators, president Delta Zeta Alumnae, president Kappa Kappa Gamma, president Delta Kappa Gamma, president Houston Alumnae Panhellenic Association and president of Houston Association of Retired Teachers.  Judy believes in being involved and very active!
